The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has published a report that it has introduced 5,000 and… 10,000 banknotes and rejected the incorrect document.
In an explanation of the grips on X’s official grip (formerly Twitter), Apex Bank described the virus circular as a counterfeit, asking Nigerians to turn to official communication channels like @whatsnextng for accurate information.
The content is not from the Central Bank of Nigeria. That’s the official website of CBN CBN.GOV.NG,” the bank said, confirming its commitment to transparency.
The wrong document gaining traction on WhatsApp claimed that the new sect was hired for the cycle from May 1st.
He also misrepresented a declaration by Dr. Ibrahim Tahir Jr., Lieutenant Governor of CBN.
It was incorrectly returned and was claimed that new memos would improve liquidity management and reduce the costs of money records.

This is not the first time that CBN has to tackle misinformation about the currency issue. In 2023, the bank faced a public review of a redesign of the… 25,… 500 and 1,000 memo controversy. Later this year there have been concerns about the spread of fake Nairanotes in key markets around the country.
The CBN confirmed that the forgery of Naira Notes is a criminal offence punishable by at least five years in prison, as warned by current director of corporate communications, Hakama Ali. The bank has ensured that Nigerians are still obligated to cooperate with the protection authorities in the integrity of the Naira.
